Massage for TMJ Dysfunction

Jaw Pain, Headaches, Neck Pain, Scalp Tension

Did you know the Masseter is the strongest muscle in your body?🤯

“The strongest muscle based on its weight is the masseter, the primary chewing muscle. With all muscles of the jaw working together it can close the teeth with a force as great as 55 pounds (25 kilograms) on the incisors or 200 pounds (90.7 kilograms) on the molars.”

Library of Congress

The Masseter is one of the primary muscles implicated in TMJD. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, known as TMJD, is a complex condition characterized by trigger points and musculoskeletal dysfunction that can lead to a variety of symptoms. The referral pain from the muscles implicated can lead to headaches, neck pain, muscle stiffness, clicking and popping of the jaw, tinnitus (ear ringing), mock sinus infections, dizziness, and blurred vision.

Massage treatments will consist of treatment to the muscles of the jaw external to the mouth and the internal muscles. Some of this work can be pretty intense, but a lot of it is actually very relaxing. It is a very slow, methodical, treatment that requires precision and focused attention to some very important muscles.

These sessions can be booked as a 30-minute condensed treatment or they can be booked as an in-depth 60-minute appointment. The hour appointment will be a more in-depth treatment with a thorough amount of neck and scalp massage, extended supplemental facial massage, and may include hot or cold applications &/or facial cupping as needed. I recommend booking the 60-Minute treatment if this is your first time booking this type of treatment with me. 30-Minute sessions are best utilized as a follow-up or as an addition to full-body massage treatments.
