What is the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)?
The Temporomandibular Joint is a pretty intricate joint that links your jawbone to your skull. It lets you do all sorts of jaw movements, like opening and closing your mouth and shifting it side to side. Because it's so complex and gets used a lot, the TMJ can easily develop issues that might lead to discomfort, pain, and restricted movement.
What is TMJD?
TMJD, or temporomandibular joint dysfunction, is a tricky condition that involves trigger points and muscle issues, leading to all sorts of symptoms such as;
headaches
neck pain
muscle stiffness
jaw clicking and popping
ear ringing (tinnitus)
fake sinus infections
dizziness, and blurred vision
difficulty or discomfort while chewing
toothaches
TMJD can happen from grinding and clenching your teeth, arthritis, overuse, injury, or structural problems. TMJ Syndrome affects muscles around your skull and neck like the temporalis, masseters, pterygoid group, sternocleidomastoid, scalene, splenius group, and the occipitals.
How can massage help?
TMJ massage therapy is all about easing up the tension in the muscles and soft tissues around the Temporomandibular Joint. As a Licensed Massage Therapist, I'll work on all the muscles connected to the temporomandibular joint using hands-on tissue therapy. This means I'll treat the jaw muscles on the outside of your mouth and also do some intra-oral work, where I access muscles through your mouth to help release them.
This special treatment can ease pain and discomfort, increase jaw mobility, reduce inflammation, and improve overall well-being.
I have options for 30 minute or 60-minute sessions. The 30-minute sessions are great to add-on to another treatment or used as a successive spot treatment. The hour session is more thorough, and I will spend an ample amount of time treating your neck, scalp, and include facial massage and cupping, in addition to the TMJ work.
